The Palace
The Royal Palace of Caserta is the largest palace in the world. It was designed in 1752 by the famous Luigi Vanvitelli and was meant to be the core of the capital city of a new kingdom. Connected to both the park and the waterfall, the palace provides a scenographic perspective.
The Grand Staircase
The Grand Staircase is known to been viewed as a reference for several staircases that came after. The 32-meter high staircase ends with a dome that once used to host an invisible orchestra. The staircase leads to a large central vestibule that leads you to the other parts of the palace such as the Chapel and the Royal Apartments.
The Royal Apartments
Luigi Vanvitelli divided the floor for the Royal Family into four quarters. The south-west quarter was for the King. The south-east was where the crown prince resided and was inhabited by the Royal Family for more than 50 years as the western side of the palace remained incomplete because of Napoleonic domination.
The Palatine Chapel
Inspired by the Royal Chapel of Versailles, the King asked Vanvitelli to design the Palatine Chapel at the Palace of Caserta. But Vanvitelli, being the genius that he was, created something entirely different while still keeping Renaissance, Baroque and Mannerist traditions alive with his neo-classical elegance.
The Parterre and the Old Woods
As you exit the main gallery, you enter a large clearing which is the Parterre. It is a French word that means “on the ground” and follows the French garden designs. It has wide grasslands as opposed to the original flower beds as the design was changed during the works. On the left side of the park is the old woods that existed even before the park was built.
The English Garden
The English garden was designed by Luigi’s son, Carlo Vanvitelli along with an English gardener, John Andrew Graefer. Queen Maria Carolina invested her personal fortune to compete with the Petit Trianon of Versailles. It is an example of an informal Italian garden that spans over 24 hectares.
Carolino Aqueduct
Named in the honor of the King Charles of Bourbon, the Carolino Aqueduct is an engineering marvel designed by Luigi Vanvitelli. It was designed to supply the Palace, gardens, fountains, the upcoming city of Caserta, and the nearby mills and agricultural lands with water. The construction of this structure was one of the most important public works done by the Bourbons.
